Early Life

Simmons was born on January 9, 1955, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. His mother Patricia Kimble was an administrator while his father Donald Williams Simmons was a music teacher at Parcells Middle School.

Simmons grew up in a family of three children. He attended Ferry Elementary School in Grosse Pointe Woods and later Worthington High School, where he participated in drama, football, and choir.

At the age of eighteen, the family relocated to Missoula after his father became the director of the School of Music at the University of Montana. Simmons also attended the University of Montana and graduated with a degree in music.

While in college, he also took part in theater. He appeared at the Bigfork Summer Playhouse in Bigfork Montana, in various roles between 1977 to 1982.

Career

Simmons relocated to Seattle and became a member of the Seattle Repertory Theatre, where he met his friend Michael Smith. Simmons landed his first role on Broadway in 1992. He played the role of Benny Southstreet in Guys and Dolls. His next role came in 1994 when he sang multiple roles in Das Barbecu.

In film and television, Simmons’s most notable roles came when he acted in Police Psychiatrist, New York Undercover, and Oz.

In 2014, Simmons played a role in Whiplash. His performance received positive criticism and it led to winning awards like an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Personal Life

In 1996, Simmons was married to film director Michelle Schumacher. They have two children Olivia and Joe, who have also begun appearing in films.
