Carer Beginnings and Early Life

Laurence was born on October 31, 1961, as the only son of Laurence and Maureen Mullen. The future drummer grew up alongside an elder and young sisters, Cecilia and Mary. His younger sister Mary died in 1973.

Laurence joined the School of Music in Chatham Row, where he started learning to play the piano. In 1971, Mullen began learning drumming, when she was only nine years old. Mullen was learning drumming under his Irish trainer Joe Bonnie, and Bonnie ‘s daughter took over the training after the death of the trainer.

Career Success

Mullen’s drumming career began with a Dublin marching band, Artane Boys Band. Mullen was discouraged from continuing to play with the band because he believed the band did not focus more on drumming, which is what he loved. After three weeks, he quit the band after some disagreements on cutting his hair.

Mullen’s father suggested to him to form a band. He told him to place a notice on the Mount Temple bulletin board, and that is how the band formed on September 25, 1976. While the band began with numerous members, by 1978 they had reduced to four members.

The band signed with Island Records and released their debut album in 1980. They released other albums including the 1983 War which debuted at number 1 in the UK. The band began going for live performances and it led to its global recognition.

Apart from his projects with his band, he did other projects as well. Mullen worked with Clayton to contribute to Nanci Griffith’s album Flyer. He also performed alongside Mike Mills and Michael Stipe during US President Bill Clinton’s inauguration.

Mullen is also an actor who has featured in several films. He had a leading role in 2011 when he starred in Man on the Train. Also, he acted in A Thousand Times Good Night drama starring opposite Juliette Binoche and Nikolaj Coster.

Mullen is married to his longtime partner Ann Acheson, whom he met when he was attending Mount Temple Comprehensive School. The duo has three children, and they reside in Southern France.
